WHAT IS CYANOTYPE?
Cyanotype is an enchanting and accessible photographic technique that has captivated artists and photographers since its invention in 1842. Known for its rich cyan-blue prints, cyanotype is an excellent starting point for beginners interested in a fun, creative, alternative photographic method.
WHAT IS CYANOTYPE PRINTING
Cyanotype printing is a contact printing process that produces stunning blue and white images using UV light and two simple chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.
WHY IS IT FUN?
Cyanotype printing can combine abstract painting and the photographic process into one unexpected, beautiful outcome. Similar to the days of film photography, you may not know how the final piece will turn out—which is exciting and part of the journey.
I love that each piece has no definitive outcome. It’s always a bit of a mystery. They are always unique and often “imperfect”, which makes them so beautiful.
Over the past few months, I’ve explored a few techniques using a cyanotype solution that I’d like to share with others in this workshop.
We will work on two final pieces together over 2 hours.
Multimedia abstract focused on “let go of the perfectionism” print. Think of this as a combination of what your kid might scribble with a crayon or oil pastel with some free-flowing abstract cyanotype solution paint strokes. We’ll expose objects (dried leaves, flowers, translucent flower petals, etc.) over the painting using UV light.
More traditional print. Think of this as a more structured canvas within which you can work. This piece will feel more intentional. I will have prepainted paper for you to work with while the paintings we do for #1 are drying 🙂
I will introduce various tools and household supplies we can use in addition to the cyanotype solution and objects. This can ignite your curiosity and imagination, allowing your creativity to flow!
I’m working on preparing kits for you to take home some of the cyanotype solutions so you can make more at home.

I hope you’re curious about trying something new with this workshop. I’ll be there to guide you and make it fun.
I’ll leave you with this excerpt of an interview with the wise Rick Rubin:
“We’re all different, and we’re all imperfect, and the imperfections are what makes each of us and our work interesting. We create pieces reflective of who we are, and if insecurity is part of who we are, then our work will have a greater degree of truth in it as a result.”
Let’s create something imperfect together!
See you there,
Jen
